Hello, and greetings from Paul Birchall at Avalon Library! I am so pleased to announce that I can reveal Avalon Library is finally going to reopen to the public starting April 19.

Starting Monday, April 19, We’re going to be open Monday through Friday. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, 10 to 5, Tuesday, noon to 7. Due to the You Know What Virus, the library will seem a little different from what you may be used to.

To ensure safe social distancing and County rules, we’ll have two public computers available, reduced seating, and a reduced maximum occupancy – we’re thinking about 6 or 7 people at a time, subject to approval from the County (they may mandate fewer people). We will still be checking out laptops and we also have the chrome books for use in the courtyard if you need a computer but can’t find one inside.

During this Limited Service period, we’ll be encouraging folks not to stay longer than an hour at a time, so as to allow people to come and go appropriately – and we will insist on six feet distancing for all folks who are not related. Masks are mandatory and if you won’t want to wear a mask, we will be glad to assist you in the style of the Sidewalk Service we’ve been doing during lockdown.

Like all the things going on now, this reopening is going to be a gradual process, but we look forward to adding more and more services in the months ahead. Meanwhile, come on down to your library and check out a book or movie!

Love Catalina, The Catalina Island Tourism Authority would like to thank all of the businesses and shoppers who participated in the week-long 2020 Shop Catalina activities. Especially appreciated was the willingness to engage in safe practices to inhibit the spread of infection among all involved. The City of Avalon, Avalon Fire Department, KISL radio, Santa & Mrs. Claus Avalon Beautiful, Avalon Rotary Club, Catalina Island Saddle Club and Lion's Club all played significant roles in making the activities a huge success. Also the businesses and residents who really decked the halls this year have made the season bright, even in the midst of a dark cloud over so much of the Holiday season.

Good evening council, I am extremely concerned for the safety of Vons employees and the residents who shop there. I am hoping that there can be some guidelines from the City such as only allowing a certain number of shoppers in at a time for social distance as there is so many people are in there at one time is not safe, employees and customers should all be wearing a face cover for the protection of all, sanitizing in between customers or every 15 minutes .
